Echolalia is a speech phenomenon where individuals repeat phrases, words, or sentences they have heard, either immediately (immediate echolalia) or after a delay (delayed echolalia). It is a common characteristic in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but can also appear in children with developmental delays, speech-language challenges, or neurotypical children as part of their language development process.
While echolalia can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of understanding, it often serves as a stepping stone in language development. Children may use echolalia to process and practice language or as a way to communicate when they are unsure of how to express themselves independently.
Echolalia Strategies for Parents
Instead of discouraging echolalia, parents can model the correct language their child might need. For instance, if the child repeats, “Do you want juice?” the parent can rephrase, “Yes, I’d like juice,” or “I want juice.”
Pair spoken language with visual cues like pictures, gestures, or written words to reinforce understanding and reduce reliance on repeated phrases.
Encourage independence in communication by giving clear choices. For example, instead of asking open-ended questions, try “Do you want juice or water?”
Respond positively to all communication attempts. Celebrate small progress to build the child’s confidence and willingness to express themselves.
Narrate what’s happening in daily routines to increase vocabulary. For instance, “This is your red shirt,” or “You’re feeling excited!”
Create opportunities for play-based learning, which promotes language in a natural, enjoyable setting.
